Weight loss and drinking water

water and weight lossLast week my weight stayed the same and my water consumption really dropped during that week when compared to the first two weeks. I have become convinced that my quick weight loss had something to do with the amount of water I drank. This week was another bad week for water. I am drinking at least 5-6 glasses a day but really I need to be drinking a minimum of 8 glasses and more likely up to 12 so I am only drinking half of my recommended about.

I decided to look around online and found this site called Weight loss for all which said the following

“Water makes your metabolism burn calories 3% faster.”

To benefit losing weight

“A 200 pound person should be drinking around 100 ounces (12.5 cups) of water in order the gain the benefits of increased energy and metabolism.”

At Herbal Nutrition Solutions I discovered that

“Water (H2O) is probably the single most important catalyst in losing weight and keeping it off”

“Water also helps to maintain proper muscle tone by giving back the muscles’ natural ability to contract and by preventing dehydration.”

“The body will not metabolize stored fat without it.”

Some other stuff I discovered

  • Drinks like tea, coffee and caffeinated drinks all cause you to lose water so you need to drink extra
  • There are many symptoms that can be helped just by drinking more water like headaches, tired muscles, joints that ache, constipation and fatigue/poor concentration
  • We lose water when we breathe – especially if it is cold, through sweaty feet (yuck!), in bed at night – we lose so much water and that all needs to be replaced to remain healthy

Hot water versus cold water

Not only am I convinced about the benefits of drinking water but I am even more convinced about hot water. In my first week of the Tesco GI Diet I was drinking at cup of hot water every few hours because I was a little hungry and it helped me to get rid of that feeling.

Now I am in the habit of having a cup of hot water as soon as I wake up because I don’t eat my breakfast until 8am and as I am up at 6.30/7 I need something to calm the noise that flows from my stomach first thing!

Sometimes I have hot water with lemon if it is available but a lot of times I forget to put lemon in so I have hot water on its own.

Here is what I discovered about the benefits of drinking hot water :

Warm lemon water serves as the perfect good morning drink, as it aids the digestive system and makes the process of eliminating the waste products from the body easier

Over at Associated Content they mention that hot water could actual improve our mental state!

“Some evidence suggests that by drinking hot water, we remove built up deposits in our nervous system. These deposits are responsible for creating negative thoughts and emotions. By removing these build ups, we can help to purify our thoughts and put us in a better emotional state. Drinking hot water can also actually purify the toxins out of your body.”

Now most of this information was obtained from blogs and my search for “hot water and weight loss” returned with 5 or 6 blogs on the first page all of whom seem to have the exact same article – although slightly amended so I don’t know if this information is something someone randomly put together or whether there is some truth in hot water and weight loss.

What I am though is very convinced and if I lose only a little weight this week or I stay the same it is because of my drop in water intake which is worse this week than it was last week.

To see whether there is anything in this I will experiment next week by making sure I drink 4 or 5 cups of hot water a day and at least 6-8 glasses of cold water and then I will see what that does for my weight loss the following week. A sudden large drop like I had in my first two weeks and I think it will be enough to convince me that loads of water is the way to go.

I certainly know what it will do for my bladder lol
